SPAN 301W Early Hispanic Texts and Contexts (taught in Spanish)
This course engages in an in-depth study of Spanish and Colonial Spanish American cultural production from the tenth through the seventeenth centuries. Topics to be discussed include: Islamic Spain, Reconquest and co-existence in medieval Iberia, the role of the Catholic Church in early modern Spain and Spanish America, the origins of the Spanish language, pre-Colombian civilizations, historiography of colonial encounters in the Americas, picaresque and autobiographical narrative, and the rewriting of literary models such as Golden Age Spanish drama and sonnets.
